What I got wrong
When doing what came naturally did not serve me well.
One of the challenges of developing our leadership is acknowledging that our ‘autopilots’ or what comes naturally to us is not enough. We don’t have the luxury; it makes us too one-dimensional.
Here are just some of what did NOT work for me.
- I thought people who worked on their visibility were self-serving
- I thought if I worked harder and harder to the point of perfection, I would be rewarded
- I thought I shouldn’t ask for what I wanted, needed and deserved
- I thought organisational politics was beneath me and not my job
But when I changed my mindset and skill set around those 4 things alone, my impact, my career and my satisfaction took off.
The main mind-set shift was moving from thinking my work should speak for itself and instead becoming clearer around what ‘my work’ constituted as I became more senior.
